The United Kingdom on Tuesday announced the opening of applications for its 2026 Chevening Scholarship.
Applications for the scholarship can be made from August 5, 2025, to October 7, 2025.
Chevening is the United Kingdom’s global scholarship programme. It is funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations.
The programme, which started in 1983, offers a fully funded one-year taught master’s degree at universities in the United Kingdom to individuals who are ready to lead positive change in their home countries and around the world.
Since its inception, over 1,500 Nigerians have been awarded the Chevening scholarship.
According to the British High Commission, for more than 40 years, the Chevening scholarship has attracted hundreds of thousands of applications globally, with over 60,000 professionals advancing their careers through it.
The Head of Scholarships Unit at the United Kingdom FCDO, Emma Hennessey, said Chevening scholarship’s highly competitive selection process ensures that those chosen represent the brightest and most driven individuals from around the world.
“Chevening alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create a meaningful and lasting change when they return home. This is whether by tackling global challenges or making a tangible impact on their own communities,” she said.
She urged individuals with a clear demonstration of outstanding leadership and networking skills, and influence to apply.
Hennessey also encouraged those without such skills to build experiences that would make their applications competitive.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Richard Montgomery, described Chevening scholarship as a gateway to a global network of leaders, innovators and change makers.
“Whether your aspirations lie in shaping public policy, launching a business, or addressing the world’s most pressing challenges, the Chevening scholarship offers a unique opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in the UK to advance your knowledge and skills.
“If you have the potential to lead positive change in your community, Nigeria, or globally, I encourage you to submit your application before the 7th of October, 2025, deadline,” Montgomery said.
According to him, prospective candidates can submit their applications via chevening.org/apply, and are encouraged to review resources available at chevening.org/guidance to assess their readiness to present a competitive application.

Dr Doyin Abiola, a wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, who was a former Managing Director of the defunct National Concord, is dead.
She passed away at the age of 82 at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday following a period of illness, according to family sources.
A pioneer in Nigerian journalism, Dr. Abiola made history as the first Nigerian woman to become editor and later managing director/editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper. Her tenure at National Concord spanned more than three decades, during which she helped shape media discourse and mentored a generation of journalists.
Born in 1943, Dr. Abiola obtained a degree in English and Drama from the University of Ibadan in 1969. She began her journalism career at the Daily Sketch, where she penned a widely read column titled Tiro, addressing issues of public concern, particularly gender equity.
In 1970, she left Nigeria to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism in the United States. Upon her return, she joined the Daily Times as a Features Writer and rose to become Group Features Editor. She later earned a Ph.D. in Communications and Political Science from New York University in 1979.
Returning to Nigeria, she served on the Daily Times editorial board alongside respected journalists such as Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan. In 1980, she became the pioneer editor of the newly launched National Concord, eventually rising to Managing Director in 1986.
She married Chief MKO Abiola in 1981 and remained a steadfast presence during his political trials, particularly after the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Dr. Abiola also contributed to the media industry in various capacities. She chaired the nomination panel for the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) and served on the advisory council of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ogun State University.
Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including the Diamond Award for Media Excellence (DAME) Lifetime Achievement Award, making her the second woman to receive the honor after Mrs. Omobola Onajide. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship in 1986.

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission ( FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has listed some measures to break barriers to the participation of youths, women and other categories of citizens in agribusiness.
Olaopa spoke in Abuja on Monday during the “High-Level Dialogue of AfDB on Bridging the Gap-Access to Finance & Empowering Youth and Women for Agribusiness Success”.
Olaopa who in a goodwill message commended AfDB’s unwavering commitment to removing the constraints against youth and women for more profitable and productive ventures in agribusiness noted that the bank’s support had been phenomenal with the redoubled momentum injected by Dr, Akinwunmi Adesina during his tenure as President of the financial institution.
According to Olaopa, the clear message of the AfDB to Nigeria, especially to the policy makers, is that meaningful strides in agribusiness expansion cannot be achieved without the dismantling of the systemic barriers that limit the capacity of young people and women from accessing finance, resources and knowledge.
He noted that improvement in grants could help youths , women and others to experiment with innovations and technologies .
“If banks and financial institutions are however unwilling to extend facilities to this cohort given the risk involved, it is understandable. Policy intervention is therefore critical to de-risk lending to young entrepreneurs in agribusiness if ever the country will make reasonable progress in expanding their participation and the profitability of such ventures .
“Youths also need mentorship by established agribusiness players as is standard for growing startups anywhere in the world. Without significant incentives extended to such players, this sense will remain a pipe dream.
” Equal access to land and market, as well as a deepened partnership among government, industry, civil society and development partners, for synergy, and to ensure a coordinated and effective response to systemic challenges being faced by the young people and women in agribusiness will be critical”, he said.
Olaopa added: “The FCSC therefore aligns itself with the goals of this dialogue, and concurs that inclusive policies, efficient extension services and service delivery to farmers and other agribusiness stakeholders should be a core of institutional reforms, going forward”.
Also at the event, the Minister of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, urged youths to be job creators and not seekers of government employment .
Olawande said that the government was working closely with the AfDB to design a strong proposal aimed at addressing critical challenges faced by young people.
On his part, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Atiku Bagudu, emphasised the need to recognise agribusiness as a viable commercial venture and not merely a subsistence activity.
Bagudu said that the government was focused on policies that would encourage the transition of millions of Nigerians into agriculture-based enterprises.
He said that the National Economic Council had recently approved a ward-based development programme under the Renewed Hope Agenda to support agricultural activities in the various wards.
In the same vein, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, said that the ministry was implementing a livestock initiative targeting 37,000 youth and women across the 36 states and the FCT.
Maiha said that the programme, which included distribution of animals and other agricultural inputs, aimed to boost food and nutrition security, enhance income generation and increase livestock productivity.
Prof. Attahiru Jega, Special Adviser to the President on Livestock, commended the AfDB for the event, saying that a policy dialogue that would address challenges faced by agribusinesses in the country was long overdue.
Jega restated the importance of conceptualising policies that would ensure national development.
