NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – Some showers and thunderstorms that started the day near the Colorado border have slowly pushed eastward toward Central Nebraska as of 8:00am (the time of this write-up). There has been a strengthening trend with a brief pulse to possible severe hail southeast of North Platte. Forecast models are not getting a good hold on how these storms will play out. Will they maintain themselves for several more hours into Central Nebraska, or will they fall apart. I’ll put in a small chance as far east as the Tri-Cities, but with a lot of uncertainty. Otherwise, look for a mix of clouds and sun around the area today. There may also be some smoky skies from wildfires in Colorado and Arizona. South southeast winds will be increasing today and will be rather strong. Those winds will blow 15 to 25 mph with some gusts possibly over 30 mph. High temperatures today will warm up to between the lower 80s northeast to the low/mid 90s in the southwest and west.
This evening, thunderstorms will fire up in the Dakotas and push southeastward toward Northeast Nebraska. Some more isolated activity could move across other portions of Northern Nebraska later tonight. But going south, the chances will get lower. There’s still a small chance though if an outflow boundary comes in from the north and sparks off an isolated thunderstorm farther south. Otherwise, look for lows in the mid to upper 60s to around 70°.
Showers and thunderstorms may linger over Eastern Nebraska early Wednesday morning. Otherwise, skies will be mostly sunny for most of the area on Wednesday. Winds will be breezy out of the south southeast, helping bring temperatures and humidity up. Lows for highs on Wednesday to range from the mid 80s northeast to the mid 90s southwest. Once again Wednesday night, thunderstorms will be possible. The best chances will again be across Northern Nebraska, but if the northern storms can produce an outflow boundary that pushes south, maybe some isolated activity will develop farther south again.
Thursday and Friday will be mostly dry days. They’ll still be a bit breezy with plenty of sunshine. High temperatures on Thursday will rise to between the upper 80s northeast to the upper 90s southwest. Many will start to see heat index values in the afternoon creeping over 100°. Friday will again be hot as some cooler air approaches from the northwest. Highs look to range from the upper 80s/lower 90s in both the northeast and the northwest, to as hot as the lower 100s in the southwest. Again, heat index values could exceed 100° for much of the area.
Friday night brings a small chances of isolated thunderstorms. Behind the cold front, temperatures will cool back to the 80s across the area on Saturday. Similar temperatures are possible on Sunday. Saturday through Sunday night brings more chances for showers and thunderstorms to the area behind the cold front. After another day in the 80s on Monday, temperatures will creep back up for the middle of next week.
