The report discovered that News & Current Affairs platforms account for the majority of digital traffic across African markets. Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria lead in this category, with some platforms attracting over 100m visits annually.
This, according to the report indicated that political, social, and economic news remains the top priority for digital audiences. “News platforms must diversify content formats (multimedia, short-form, newsletters) to keep audiences engaged”
The report also noted that specialized platforms in business, tech, and lifestyle are growing rapidly. Readers are shifting towards tailored content, meaning niche platforms are gaining higher engagement rates despite smaller audiences.

This is an indication that media outlets must invest in quality niche reporting ( fintech news, AI trends, startup coverage) to attract loyal audiences.
It also noted that strong social media engagement correlates with high rankings in digital influence. Platforms that leverage cross-platform promotion (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram) tend to perform better. “Traditional website visits are no longer the sole measure of success; platforms need a strong social presence”.
