Popular Big Brother Naija star, Natacha “Tacha” Akide, has voiced her disapproval over the growing Labubu toy trend sweeping across Nigerian social media.
The collectible toy, which sells for between N160,000 to N260,000, has become a must-have accessory for many young Nigerians, especially women, who attach it to their bags and outfits.
In a viral video posted on Instagram, Tacha criticized those spending huge sums on the toy, accusing them of falling victim to peer pressure while neglecting their financial responsibilities.
“Even the people that have not chop belleful are going to buy Labubu,” she said, warning that many don’t even understand the origin or meaning of the toy but are only buying it to follow trends.
She added: “You never chop belleful you want to go and spend N200k on Labubu, a culture you don’t even understand. You have bills to pay but you prefer to follow your friends buying Labubu. What is Labubu? You can’t even spell it.”
The Labubu toy, part of “The Monsters” series created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and sold by Chinese company Pop Mart, features elf-like figures with mischievous smiles and pointed ears.
Originally a limited-edition collectible, the toy has become a social media sensation in Nigeria.
