EXPLAINER: Why GTBank is trending on X in Nigeria – Tribune Online

1

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) is trending on Nigerian social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), as customers express frustration and disappointment over what they described as the bank’s poor service delivery lately.
Numerous complaints have surfaced, with users alleging unauthorized deductions from their accounts. One customer claimed to have been debited ₦400,000 without any explanation, and despite raising the issue with the bank, no resolution has been provided.
Other customers have reported being charged for airtime they never purchased and having their accounts unexpectedly placed on debit restrictions.
Here are several reactions from X users:@ Maxvayshia™
So, something is has been happening at @gtbank for a while now and people have not been able to talk about it, surprisingly, despite experiencing it. There seems to be an ongoing fraud there, ripping people off their monies.
1. Your account could read ZERO balance and from nowhere, you see a MINUS N400k balance in your account as if you took a loan and the loan was due. You don’t have access any money paid to you.
2. Any money that hits your account gets deducted because of the “debt” that was placed on your account magically.
3. If that is your salary account, when your salary gets paid and it hits your account, it disappears or the amount you “owe” is deducted and you are given your change.
4. You complain at customer care. They run diagnostics and find that on your last salary payment before the present one “you were paid twice” but you didn’t see any alert and your account always read zero until the sudden magic. So if you do not check your account regularly, you won’t know when they hit you with a minus.
5. They tell you to sort it out with your employers that a LIEN was placed on your account. You contact your employers and it is not from them as they paid ONCE. But your bank said you were paid twice.
6. You check your bank statement and it shows that you were paid by your bank (same salary amount) but it never hit your account but is it reading negative. So you “owe” them.
7. You get tossed up and down tillyou get tired. Your money GONE. Untraceable. 1 to 7 above is my story today and that of many other people i know hut who don’t have a voice to call them out. Please call out this bank. Don’t ignore this tweet. Don’t scroll past. It is us today, if you use GTB, it will sure get to you. Changing salary account could be done but as at now, we need to be saved from this mess.
This is scam and this is unfair. If you have a GTB account, it is advised that you take all your money out and close your account with them. A lot is happening there as at now. Please RT, tag them and comment. Don’t ignore. Please.

Dear @gtbank if you guys are tired of operating a proper banking system, kindly merge or inform the public to do the needful, rather than tormenting people with your failures.

I don’t understand the kind of broad daylight fraud that is going on in GTBank
Like how are you guys just debiting people randomly. Airtime purchase as how. I haven’t been able to use my app for a month now.

🔴 Dear Nigerians, it’s time to speak up!
Many customers, including myself, are losing hard-earned money at @gtbank, with flimsy and incongruous excuses
Despite reporting to @cenbank and @NDICNigeria, no action has been taken. Complaints are rising, yet no one seems to listen!

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsRecall Tribune Onine reported that  GTBank recently experienced disruptions in its digital and branch services due to an upgrade of its core banking system.
This caused temporary inconvenience for customers, sparking discussions online. The bank announced closures and reduced functionality during the transition but reassured customers that these upgrades aim to enhance service delivery

Also, earlier this year, the bank faced a hacking attempt on its website, which led to concerns about data security. Although GTBank confirmed that no customer data was compromised, the incident highlighted the rising cybercrime threats in Nigeria’s banking sector. This issue resurfaced as part of broader conversations on banking security.
However, this ongoing issues have fueled criticism, with many calling for urgent reforms in the bank’s customer service and technical operations to restore trust and confidence.
